Our goal is for English learners is
to develop fluency in English and proficiency in the district’s
core curriculum as rapidly and as effectively as possible.
The program is defined as English Language
Development (ELD also referred to as ESL) and each English
Language Learner (ELL) will achieve English oral language
skills appropriate to his/her age and level of ability; they
will achieve English reading, comprehension, and writing skills
commensurate to those other students of similar age and ability.
The defined program is based on The California ELD Standards
until students are redesignated as Fluent English Proficient.
PSD English Learner population is approximately
6% of total students enrolled in the district.
Approximately 20 different languages are spoken by ELL students;
Spanish and Tagalog are the predominant languages spoken other
than English.
At the district level the District English
Language Advisory Committee meets several times a year to
assist with English Learner Programs and Services. All
parents are invited to attend meetings and participate on
the committee.
